In 1885 William Brown Jennings and Samual Goodwin combined their talents and formed a partnership to manufacturer cabinets. Their shop was located at Hincks and Talbot Streets. Ten years later Jennings went into business on his own and in 1899 moved to the present location of Jennings Furniture - 432 Talbot Street. W.B.Jennings' two sons, Albert and Wilfred eventually joined their father in operating the famiily business and together they managed to survive the economic difficulties of the depression in the 1930's. At the end of World War II, Wilfred's daughter Mary was married at Albert 'Ab' Hammond who later joined his father-in-law in running the store. 1953 Wilfred died and Ab retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force and eventually became sole owner of Jennings Furniture. The Hammond's three sons Bruce, Dean, and Scott worked at the store through their high school years and in the 70's joined their father in day-to-day operation of the store. Having established a solid foundation, Ab retired from Jennings, turning the family enterprise over to the next generation. Today Bruce, and Scott are actively involved in expanding and improving the business with innovative marketing and merchandising techniques. Several cosmetic changes have taken place in recent years but the basic business philosophy of the past century remains unchanged. Personal service quality furniture and customer satisfaction will continue to be the hallmark of Jennings Furniture for the next one-hundred years. |
